I read in the piece that the Women are calling for 25 horse drawn ambulances. I thought this idea was thought by the PPP. The experts that looked at it said it will lead to poor health delivery standards. So what has changed now to make the horse drawn ambulances suitable once more?

| Why can't they ask for normal ambulances as YAYA been given lots of millions in loan for the GAMBIANS. |

| May be it is about technology transfer or may be sustainability. I hope the experts will look at it as it affects pregnant mothers. May be with better shock absorbers it will be useful in very rural areas. |

The issue in Gambia with vehicles seems to be maintenance. School buses, taxis, jeeps all have the same problem to contend with; the awful road conditions. Then repairing the vehicle is relatively expensive and sometimes the parts or the skilled labour required are not easy to find.
There is not point providing expnesive ambulances if 6 months later they are out of use. Perhaps a fleet of jeeps would be more use? Or perhaps the roads need fixing first??? |

| This is not pleasant to say,the reason that any engine driven vehicle used in Gambia will not be effective because the driver, the mechanic who provides maintainance will tinker with the vehicle,why a driver does this I dont know but the reason a mechanic does this is that he thinks OK I can fix this small problem but I will create another problem so that the vehicle will only last for a couple of days then it will come back to me for more work I have to live and get food for my family so I need money,this is true, look at the condition of most of the vehicles on Gambian Roads,this condition is not caused by bad road surfaces. |

| Jambo,I agree but its not fair to blame everything on infrastructure,GOOD roads that are well built cost money,as far as I know when roads are built they are built by Senegalese contractors who bring their own machinery for construction AND THEIR OWN WORKERS,this of course does not help the Gambians to obtain work which they are quite capable of doing and unemployed Gambians are not offered work by the Senegalese contractors.I have nothing at all against the Senegalese but Gambian Labour is plentyful and available and I think should be utilised in road building and other projects carried out by foreign contractors. |

The people who are behind these publicity should face the reality or relax. Instead of mobilising innocent and poor women to meet jammeh discussing or proposing hopeless projects, they should face it and tell jammeh to retrieve the money he is saving in foreign banks and invest it in Gambian prosperity.

ONE DAY...when all my responsiblities here are taken care of there is nothing I would like more than to teach for a year at Tendaba.
I could live at the camp, swim in the pool and visit my friends in the village. I could go to Soma for the internet. I would have keen enthusiastic students to teach. It will be fantastic......I aim to do it before I am 50! (4 years yet!)
What would I miss from home? My children. My parents. My brother....
Yorkshire. My animals. English tea. English chocolate. Coronation street....that's about it!
So if I want to teach in Gambia how do I go about it? I particularly would like to teach in Tendaba because I love it so much. |
