Why this sudden change ? it has long been the case that MOST commercial vehicles in Gambia are overloaded,the manufactures limits on load has been pushed to the side,take the rucks with very many wheels these carry 70 tons !!!! far above the design weight.
Such "changes" will have the following effect when the "New" Weighbridges are opened,FIRSTLY a new "cash cow" for the Government as MOST commercial vehicles on Gambian roads are seriously overloaded.
Secondly, The Trans Gambia Bridge will suffer deterioration if the bridge is to have vehicles passing over it FAR IN EXCESS of its design weights,this will not make the Senegal administration at all happy and when structural problem occour,the Senegalese will lose face.

The Ministry of Works had made an announcement of steps taken to use weigh bridges to support the proper maintenance of the road system in the country.
One anticipated that the Government will update the nation on the weight that bridges will be able to carry, give priority to new bridges to ensure that they carry the weight so that those who own transport would not overload to cause unnecessary deterioration of roads and bridges. In short, those carrying the right load would not undergo any charges and those carrying overload would face the penalty.
One would have also imagined that the National Roads Authority would be responsible for establishing the weigh bridges and receiving any revenue to be utilised for maintenance. Foroyaa is of the view that any charges on transportation or payment of excise duty would ultimately lead to increases in the prices of commodities which will be detrimental to the people and obstruct the eradication of poverty. The government must not allow any profiteering in the area of transportation of commodities. It should protect the transporters, the bridges and the roads. The National Roads Authority must know the weight of vehicles that could lead to the deterioration of roads and protect the road by reprimanding transporters for overloading. This is the only legitimate cost that should be added. The public interest is to be protected.

Scores of Truck drivers who converged on Thursday at the Banjul Lorry Park expressed their dissatisfaction with the intervention of the Police in their work, which they regard as interference. Two fully loaded double cabin pickups carrying Riot PIU officers in full gears were at the scene.
The drivers say that all lorries are expected to queue before loading merchandise, and the rule is ‘first come first serve’. Musa Sumareh President of the Gambia Truckers Association (GTA), said five lorry owners refused to join the queue and they insisted that they will not follow the rules. “Three of them after a thorough negotiation with us agreed to comply,” but two of them refused to follow the rules and claim that they will not negotiate.
This Mr. Sumareh said prompted them to stop their lorries from loading for almost few days now until Thursday evening when the PIU came to forcefully ask the drivers to leave the said vehicles to load without following the queue. He alleged that the police towed a vehicle and took it to the mobile traffic police unit in Kanifing.
Musa Ceesay Vice President of the GTA, said they really don’t want any authority to ‘interfere’ with the way they work. He said their policy will help all drivers to share the cake, or benefit and he added it will avoid few people monopolising their business leaving others Jobless.
“Most of those who do not want to join the queue will want to have more than 3 trips in a month, while others cannot even get a single trip”, he lamented.
He said that prior to their enforcement of the policy they have engaged various relevant ministries including the trade to seek for their blessings, which he said was done.
He stressed that they are Gambians and this where they get our survival.
Omar Touray Gambia Transport Union President said the authorities should be there to empower Gambians trying to engage in a positive venture. He said if authorities are letting others by-pass the queue this will give upperhand to a few while others will not be given equal access. He said “If all are accepting it why are not these two people?”
Efforts were made to talk to Alieu Secka and Marr Secka, both of who left the scene and couldn’t be reached. Also attempts were made to reach the Police Spokesperson for comments but he couldn’t be reached.
The Gambia Truckers Association are supervising both the Banjul Lorry Park that can house more than 100 trucks and Abuko which has a bigger space.

The Gambia Truckers Association yesterday converged at the Semega-Janneh hall in Talinding to discuss the weight bridge at the Denton Bridge and other issues affecting their as truck owners and drivers. The Truckers Association threaten a sit down strike if their demands are not met.
Afrique passage Gambia limited, is a Senegalese company responsible for the axle load control on temporal weighing site, 8 weigh bridges are said to be signed but only one was constructed at Denton Bridge along the Banjul-Serekunda highway
GTA is demanding government to terminate the contract with the Senegalese company thus making the bridge solely owned by Gambians.
The Association pledge to refund Afrique passage all investment in Weigh Bridge and take control of the Weigh Bridge relocating it from Banjul to Mandinaba. The GTA will have a profit sharing scheme with the government of the Gambia by paying 20% to the government and take ownership of the bridge.
Speaking at the meeting Abubakar Bensouda the Secretary General of GTA affirmed that the charges imposed on them were very expensive, and that was what prompted their meeting with government so as to reduce the tariffs. Government according to the Secretary General accepted to reduce the tariffs from D1, 800 to D350 per ton.
Among key issues raised by members of the association is the awarding contracts to foreigners over Gambians. This they described as huge hindrance to the economy of country as it shifts controlled to foreigners instead of Gambians.
Adhering to the above the mentioned issue of non-awarding of contracts to Gambians, the association decided to register its members. As a measure to ensure that any unknown vehicle which is awarded a contract in the Gambia, drastic measures will be taken to address the matter.
They implore on government to give early notifications before any increment in the price of petroleum and driven license are pronounced. GTA Threatening that if their demands are not agreed upon by the government all passenger vehicles in the country will go on a sit down strike.
Attached bellow were the demands of the Gambia Truckers Association
• The weight bridge should be moved from Denton bridge to Serekunda so as not to increase cost of living in the Kombos
• Create parking area close to weigh stations
• Use total vehicle gross weight and not individual axles meaning if a particular 1qaxle is overweight but total gross weight is fine no charges will be applied.
• 25% tolerance
• Vehicle height limit 4.85 and not 4.50m
• Weighting charge for transit trucks D500.00.
• Weighting charge for local trucks D150.00
• Penalty for transit vehicles D500.00 per ton
• Penalty for local vehicles D200.00 per ton
• Waves charge for trucks that carry sand and red stone so as not increase cost of construction.
