On Saturday, Malleh told this reporter on phone that he was picked up by men called ‘the jugulars’ and since then he was held at the NIA without any explanation as to why he was arrested and detained. Asked if the said men tortured him while he was in detention, he said he was well and safe there as the jugulars leader asked the NIA agents for his protection which they did. He has now reunited with his family.

It could be recalled that M. Jabang was abducted on Thursday, 10 November, 2016 in broad daylight at Abuko Abattoir by three men in plain clothes.

He said no reason or questions were posed to him regarding why he was brought to the NIA. ‘‘I’m free finally, for more than 3 months my boss Sabally and I were arrested without any reason and none of the agents can tell us why,’’ he explained.

‘‘I have arrived home safe and well and was welcomed with a large number of my family, neighbours and other relatives coming all the way from up country, who offered prayers for me,” he said.

It was reported that Mr Jallow was arrested since on Friday, 2 September, 2016, and detained at the NIA headquarters in Banjul.

DETAINED FOR NINE MONTHS WITHOUT TRIAL OR INTERROGATION

By Mustapha Jallow
Foroyaa: February 3, 2017

http://www.foroyaa.gm/archives/14231

Mr. Sanusi Sanyang, a painter, who works at Batokunku Village, was arrested and detained unlawfully without being brought to court for about 9 months.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) supporter told Foroyaa that during his nine months detention, he was never interrogated by anyone.
Mr Sanyang was released on 23 January, 2017 around 6pm after the announcement by President Barrow that all detainees held unlawfully should be released. “I was held at the confinement Unit of the Prison [at Mile 2] alongside other prisoners that were [sentenced to] life imprisonment. I thank the new government for my freedom as I have escaped death after Jammeh has left power and gone to exile,’’ he asserted.
On how he got arrested, Mr. Sanyang said, one day, he returned home from work and a man told him to run away because he is in a trap and he will be arrested.
Two days later, on May 10, 2016 he was arrested and taken to the NIA headquarters where he received inhuman and degrading treatment, he added. He said at some point it was difficult for him to open his eyes as he was subjected to degrading treatment by his captors.
“I was forced to write a statement when I do not know the reason for my arrest,” Sanyang explained.
He further narrated how the inhuman and degrading treatment continued.
According to him, when a detainee is sick in prison, he is hardly taken to hospital since the wardens often prefer to treat him/her in prison.
He described the food served to them as poor, noting that it lacks vitamin and the prisoners are treated inhumanly.
He said at Mile 2, he was kept in solitary confinement in a cell for three (3) months without freedom to go out which affected his vision. He however pointed out that he was later allowed to walk within the prison yard.

The family of Lance Corporal Tumani Jallow, a plain clothes state guard soldier close to former President Yahya Jammeh have begun mourning the presumed death of the young officer amid uncertainty that he is alive after months of disappearance without trace.

Amoro Kebbeh, uncle of the victim while talking to this reporter said his nephew who is about 28 years old was enrolled in the army 6 years ago, indicating that he went missing on the 15th August, 2016 after he was arrested at work.

He said they could not find out what led to his arrest and disappearance from official source.

The uncle explained, “we have tried to find him by visiting so many detention centres in the country such as the NIA headquarters in Banjul, Mile II Prisons and Janjangbureh Prison but we could not find him.”

He said the pressure on the family went even higher when they realized that he was not part of those released by the new government recently.

“Right now people have begun paying condolences to the family because it is highly believed that he was killed. This is because we conducted search on all the places and the authorities said they don’t see him so the family made charity for him,” he expressed in a sorrowful tone.

He said the 28 old was not married, but was a responsible personality.

“We are very much sad and concerned about his disappearance,” he decried.

OUSMAN JAMMEH RELEASED FROM INCOMMUNICADO DETENTION

By Mustapha Jallow
Foroyaa: January 31, 2017

http://www.foroyaa.gm/archives/14156

Former deputy minister of agriculture, Mr. Ousman Jammeh, who was released on 23 January, 2017 around 4pm said he is willing to sue ex-president Yahya Jammeh for illegally detaining him without trial and denying him access to his family and friends.

Mr. Jammeh said this during a brief interview on Friday, 27 January, at his residence in Kanifing South following his release from detention by the new government.

He told the reporter that he served as deputy agriculture minister from July 2015 to October 2015. He said that he does not know why he was arrested and detained without trial for fifteen months.

The former deputy minister recalled that it was on 15 of October 2015, while he was on his way to attend the commemoration of World Food Day as well as inaugurate an event of association of livestock farms in the Upper River Region, when he was asked to return.

“…when I reached Ginnu village, I received a phone call telling me that the protocol for the vice president would like to talk to me and she told me that she wants me to return and I should report immediately at state house. When I asked whether I can stay to attend these events, she insisted that I had to go back. So I drove back to her office and on my arrival she gave me a letter and telling me “well you have been relieved from the position of deputy minister of agriculture as order came from the president. In the letter I was told to go to the office and hand over all the documents to the newly appointed person and which I complied with. While on my way, I met some men who identified themselves as agents of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) at the door of the former vice president and they told me that I was under arrest and they asked me to go and stay at the NIA headquarters in Banjul,” he revealed.

Mr. Jammeh further explained that he was escorted by the operatives to his office to do the handing over, adding that it was on their way back when he told that he was under arrest and that the instruction is that he should be detained. “I asked what the reason was, but they again told me that they were only given instructions and they did not know the reason for my detention,” he said.

The former minister revealed that he was held for 91 days at NIA headquarters before being transferred to the maximum security wing at Mile Two prison where he spent one year three months with few days and he was released finally on the 23rd January.

He expressed relief that former president Jammeh has finally left power and that the people have gained freedom back. On how he felt now, Mr. Jammeh said he is very happy that the new government has facilitated his release from long detention without trial.

“I did not have access to my family, relatives or friends and efforts were made on several occasions to engage a lawyer. People will come to visit me at the prison but I’ill not have the chance to talk to them, my family could not see me for more than a year,” he told this reporter.

Dilating on his experience in the prison, former deputy agric minister said “Well, food was a problem, I was there for more than a year without eating meat,” he said.

He also lamented the poor hygienic condition of the prison.

“Well, I was managing my own conditions, as there were no enough drugs but my family usually provides them for me,’’ he revealed.

RELEASE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW! The new Gambian Govt must in order to show that it not only believes in democracy but that it practices it, release all prisoners imprisoned during the Jammeh regime who were arbitrarily picked up for their opposition, dissent and for reasons unknown.

However, the family informed this medium that their loved one was in his home village at the time of the 14 and 16 April incidents and had not taken part in any of them. Both his mother and wife spoke to this reporter immediately after his arrest, expressing their concern regarding his state of mental health as he is said to be vulnerable to a relapse if he does not take his medication.
