A team of technical experts from different stakeholder institutions have recently validated the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of ten road networks to be constructed within three administrative regions.
Held at Ocean Bay Hotel in Cape Point, Bakau, Upper, Central and North Bank Regions will be the beneficiaries. The road construction came through the European Union, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) which is implementing a 3-year project called reinforced access of the most vulnerable populations to markets and socio-economic facilities through feeder roads rehabilitation programme.
The key objective of the Project is to provide communities to access markets and health services among other social amenities in accordance with Gambia National legislation and Environmental Impact Assessment of 2014. An environmental approval must be sought from the National Environmental Authority (NEA) prior to the commencing of the construction activities as part of the project.
The document present findings of the ESIA undertaken at the ten (10) feeder roads. The report also include appropriate cost effective mitigation measures for implementation.
NEA`s acting Director of Technical Services Network Dr. Dawda Badgie said environmental and social baseline studies were undertaken to obtain up to date information of the project impacted communities.
He said due to time constraint, environmental baseline information was sourced from existing reports of the project areas and other secondary literature, while the socioeconomic information was obtained by conducting household field surveys and stakeholder consultation programs.
Malang Jammeh, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Works disclosed that road infrastructure and transport sector plays a strategic role in the socio-economic development of Gambia.
He said the availability and access to good roads is a significant indicator for promoting and ensuring that economic gains reach the spreads of diverse population in every country. “The transport sector is known to account for a substantial percentage of the country’s GDP and generates a significant share of the total budgetary revenue of the country as supported by international donor funding organizations,” DPS Jammeh posited.
Going through the document, Saikou BM Njai, a local consultant revealed that a total of 104km trunk and inter village roads would be constructed.
In the Upper River Region, Sotu Masamba of Fuladu East will benefit from a trunk road of 4.9km, 7.8km from Chamoi through Dampha Kunda to Tamba Sansang in Fulladu East, 23.4km from Suduwol to Fatoto in Kantora, 17.4km from Sambar Kunda to Kulari Ndimba in Tumana and Kantora, and a 7.6km from Baja Kunda to Boro Kandakase in Wuli.
