What is the nature of the state to state relation between Gambia and Senegal?
If the comments made by President Jammeh during his tour are to be utilised as a yardstick one would conclude that the state to state relation between The Gambia and Senegal is sour. President Jammeh alleges hostile actions such as border restrictions and complicity with Gambians and Foreign governments aimed at subverting his government. People are wondering why the President has made this a topic during a tour designed to examine the impact of government policy on the population.
The remarks are indeed an early warning signal that all is not well with Senegal –Gambia state relation despite the existence of the Senegalo Gambian Secretariat.
There is need to defuse narrow nationalist sentiments and promote Pan African sentiments if peaceful coexistence of states and peoples are to be maintained.

The Constitutional role of the Gambian media is to promote the provisions of the constitution and hold the government accountable to the people of the Gambia.
It is out of concern that the executive is steering the nation away from the directive principles of state policy as prescribed by the Constitution when it comes to international relations: Section 219 of the Constitution reads: “The State shall endeavour to ensure that in international relations it-
•promotes and protects the interest of The Gambia;
•seeks the establishment of a just and equitable international economic and social order;
(c ) fosters respect for international law, treaty obligations and the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means; and
(d) is guided by the principles and goals of international and regional organisations of which The Gambia is a signatory.”

In an apparent official response to Yaya Jammeh's recent criticism of the president of Senegal, referring him recently as a hypocrite, a rat and a puppet of France, Matar Diop, Special Adviser to Macky Sall, has responded by referring to Jammeh as a criminal and a fool.
