Police probe D6M armed robbery

Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Lamin Njie has confirmed that a joint police investigation is ongoing into a reported armed robbery near Sukuta on Saturday.
On that day, it is reported that armed robbers attacked a vehicle carrying staff of AMM Financial Service and Bureau De Change and robbed them of D6.5 million.
“We can confirm having a report of the said armed robbery and the police have instituted a joint panel of investigators looking into the matter and investigations are ongoing and also the Anti-crime unit of the police is equally tracking and following. The panel is working, so we hope soon they will be able to put something together that we can share with the public,” PRO Njie explained. Modou Lamin Saho, a staff of the Bureau, told journalists that the incident happened after work on Saturday as the staff were escorting money to the house of their CEO in Sukuta.

EDITORIAL
The shocking news that some gunmen way-laid members of a forex bureau on their way to Sukuta, gun-pointed them to hand over D6M, is scary. The method used according to the victims was professional. The gunmen must have studied the routine operation of the bureau staff and must have established that the staff move money each evening after work, through a certain road using a certain car, before planning their operation with clinical success.
This is a very serious matter about which every Gambian must be apprehensive. It simply shows that our country is not as safe as we might think.
This incident also brings to shaper focus the often down-played issue of gun control in our country. Are there guns scattered everywhere in the country or are they brought by invaders who come to do an operation and leave? How far are our authorities informed about this? What is being done to find out whether guns are rampant in our streets?
The issues also remind one of the recent importations of supposed hunting guns that are supposedly legally imported into the country. If these guns are legally imported and are meant for only hunting, are there any effective measures to establish who purchase them and are they being used for the purpose intended? In any case, it is indisputable that guns are no ordinary merchandise and therefore its importation and control should be strictly monitored if not banned. Already, many Gambians are of the view that a country such as ours has so many other priority-imported good and needs far different from and more important than guns.
We are not in any way suggesting that the guns used in this operation could have come from the imported hunting guns; we are only concerned about any act that would make guns rampantly available to people.
Even in the US and other countries where guns are sold, if a citizen wishes to purchase a handgun to protect themselves, they go through a rigorous background screening and psychological evaluation. If there are less guns circulating, there’s less of a chance of one falling into the wrong hands. |

Notorious “burglar” arrested over D6.5M

Jabel Ceesay, a Senegalese who has been described by security personnel as a “renowned burglar” has been reportedly arrested in Mbour, Senegal, in connection with the D6.5 million theft case at the AMM Finance Services and Bureau De Change Ltd., The Point has been reliably informed.
A source who is familiar with the matter has confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspect in Senegal, saying: “Security high command in The Gambia are working closely with their Senegalese counterparts with a view to extradite the suspect in the country so that he could face justice.”
It could be recalled that the AMM Financial Services Operations Manager Muhammed A. Jallow, once told local media that he was robbed at Sukuta while trying to drop the money at his brother’s home by armed men dressed in blacks with face masks.
He revealed that as he parked his car at his brother’s gate waiting to hand him the money he saw a vehicle speeding towards him. He added that he did not think they were armed robbers.
“I thought they had an emergency with the way they were driving,” he went on, saying when the men found him sitting in his car they ordered him to open the door.”
He stated that he refused to open the door and the men fired two gun shots at the passenger’s side window and forcefully opened the door, hit him in the face with a big stick and went away with the money.
He said after the men hit him, he fell to the ground and cried for help but no one came to his rescue. He added that the police have promised to investigate the matter.
Mr. Jallow said the vehicle that the armed robbers used was without a number plate but said he could identify the men if he saw them.
