The was serious fire outbreak last night which started at a Gas depot. Many properties were burnt including cars and ware houses.

Panic as loud explosion heard from Kanifing Industrial Area

EYEAFRICA TV: Banjul, The Gambia: People were frantically running for their lives while others move towards Kanifing Industrial Area Sunday evening, following loud explosions which was heard from the area. The incident covered more than 200 meter square.
The cause of the explosion and the exploded materials could not yet be confirmed but more than five fire fighter stations, including that of the Banjul international Airport came to the scene to help curtail the fire. Several workshops and cars were burnt to ashes in the fire.
The burning seems not nearing it ending. The cause of the fire and the institution or workshop where it emanated from are based on speculations which are yet to be confirmed but eye witnesses suggest that it emanated from a gas company in the area.
Several people from Brikama, Lamin and Banjul said smoke from the explosion can be seen from more than 10 kilometers.

A huge fire at the Kanifing Industrial Zone Sunday evening caused colossal damage to property estimated in millions of dalasis.
At around dusk on Sunday, deafening sounds from exploding gas containers could be heard several kilometres from the industrial zone with conflagration and thick smoke billowing several metres sky-high.
First of its kind in the history of fire outbreaks in the country, the sounds of explosions from the fire have sent many in the residential areas of Kanifing and Old Jeshwang out from their houses onto the streets for either out of curiosity or panic.
As of on Sunday night, no live has been reported lost in the fire but the victims mostly factory owners have started counting the costs.
President Adama Barrow on Monday visited the disaster site to view the damage caused by the fire.
“It’s a very unfortunate situation but I cannot thank the fire service enough for the hard work under very difficult circumstances. We are here to see and assess what we are going to do,” Mr Barrow said.
The cause of the fire disaster has not been officially established yet but sources say it started from Hadim Gas Company and the destruction that it caused the gas distribution company and the businesses around it is unquantifiable. |

No Lives have been lost.That's very good news indeed.
Destroyed property can be replaced,it also has to be remembered that this property and other properties which were destroyed has employees who will be suffering through lack of jobs and relying on others to provide for their survival whilst they find new employment, which will not be easy. |

The fire incident reportedly broke out from the gas depot on Sunday evening spreading to the nearby companies, warehouses and car garages.

State House, Banjul, 28th October 2019 - His Excellency, President Adama Barrow, accompanied by a high-level government delegation, paid a visit to the site of a fire incident that occurred at a gas depot in the Kanifing Industrial Area to assess first-hand the level of damage in preparation for the next steps of the government.
The fire incident reportedly broke out from the gas depot on Sunday evening spreading to the nearby companies, warehouses, and car garages.
Speaking to the media after the inspection of the burnt facilities, President Barrow recounted how, upon hearing the news, he kept on closely monitoring the situation until midnight.
“It is a very unfortunate and difficult situation….We cannot thank enough the respondents from the fire service team for the hard work. They work under very difficult circumstances but the good thing is they are very determined to put out the fire and contain the situation,” President Barrow told the press, stating that preventive measures will be taken to reassess the safety standards in place at similar facilities across the country.
President Barrow announced that the government will set up a commission of inquiry to look into what had happened in order to establish facts around the cause of the fire and how to avoid future recurrence.
Additionally, the assessment will further enable the government to establish the level of damage caused. President Barrow assured that the government will give all the support within its capacity to the victims of the incident.

Things are becoming a bit clearer with the passage of time ,as exeplified by this extract from The Standard newspaper:

Victims of Sunday’s devastating fire in the heart of the Kanifing Industrial Area are still counting their losses, which according to a local factory worker could run into hundreds of millions of dalasis.
While the cause and source of the fire have not been officially established, the raging flames engulfed the entire area burning a well-stocked furniture shop, a ware house selling general merchandise and a mechanic garage filled with motor vehicles.
According to eye witnesses, the actual source of the fire is not yet known but it only surged into higher heights when it reached Haddim Gas company, where loud explosions were heard as gas canisters caught fire feeding the flames that could be seen as far away as Abuko.
Fed by the exploding gas, the flames travelled to hit a furniture shop which was burnt to ashes.
A nearby mechanic garage with long line of cars waiting to be repaired was next in the path of marauding flames. at least 107 cars were burnt to ashes in the garage including a newly acquired SUV of Fatou Touray, CEO of Kerr Fatou Media Group.
’’I took the car to the garage to repair an electronic fault. I found only a skeleton shape of it which I am going to remove now,’’ she told The Standard yesterday.
The scene was one of complete devastation with charred bodies of plants and other industrial equipment spread all over. The explosions and sky rending flames triggered a major operation by the fire fighters who mobilised men and equipment from any available station to contain the blaze that was threatening residential areas.
President Adama Barrow could not hold his emotions after visiting the scenes yesterday. “This is a very sad accident which the government will investigate,’’ the president said.
He thanked the fire fighters for containing the flames thus preventing it from travelling afar to residential areas.
“We will also look at other institutions doing the same business to see whether they are following the safety standards. These are important things that we have been ignoring and have caused lot of damages,” he said.
The President said it is only after the enquiry that the total damage can be established.
He said government will as usual endeavor to ensure that adequate measures are put in place to ensure safety for people at all times all over the country.

Inventory worth millions of Dalasis has been destroyed after a fire ravaged a J-Mart Furniture store Sunday evening in Kanifing. Bedroom sets, wardrobes, living room sets, desks, carpets and rugs among other pieces were all lost in the explosion.

Yusuf Bakhos, brother to the Managing Director of J-Mart, witnessed the explosions and fire. “Those flames were massive,” he told The Chronicle. “You could really barely talk to each other out here because it was so loud,” he said. “We received a distress call at about 7:35pm from the watchman that there was fire outbreak at the store. We tried our best before the Fire Service came in. We used water from our borehole to try and quench the fire, but the fire was raging,” he said.
The blast originated the gas tank area of Hadim Gas, and all production has been stopped. Emergency personnel from multiple towns including firefighters responded to the fire.
The cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained, however, according to an eyewitness, there was an explosion of a gas plant at Hadim Gas, a nearby energy company. The fire quickly raged over to the stores of J-Mart Furniture.
“There was dirt. There was a smell and I wouldn’t know how to describe it. It wasn’t a gassy smell, it was more like a dirt smell,” Yusuf said. While the extent of damage is being assessed, over 14-million-dalasis worth of furniture has been destroyed, claims Yusuf. “We recorded a very big loss here, but we thank God that there was no loss of life or injury.”

However, the public relations officer of The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services told The Chronicle that formal investigations into the cause and origin of the explosion will begin tomorrow, October 29th.

"Before the incident, I got a new garage and I started relocating some of the cars; 14 were moved and 91 were left behind. I placed all the keys of the 14 vehicles in one of the cars which were part of those burnt during the incident,” he explained."
