Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will arrive in Banjul today for three days visit.
The Royal Highnesses’ visit, which is at the request and on behalf of the British government, will celebrate the U.K.’s dynamic, forward-looking partnerships with the Commonwealth nations on a range of shared priorities.
The visit will highlights key themes in this relationship, including the importance of our Commonwealth ties; youth opportunities; the environment and sustainability; business, entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility; women and girls; literacy; defence cooperation; and religious and cultural diversity.
President Adama Barrow will welcome the British royal highnesses to the country, at a ceremony at McCarthy Square in Banjul.
Key events in the programme will include a visit to the MRC Unit The Gambia to recognise its pioneering research into diseases and public health challenges affecting millions of people across Africa.
The Duchess of Cornwall’s programme will also include a visit to a school to meet young people aspiring to enter The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, which is the world’s oldest schools’ international writing competition, managed by The Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883.

Ahead of his 70th birthday celebrations in November, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit The Gambia tomorrow on 31 October to celebrate the country’s return to the Commonwealth.
The royal couple will be welcomed at a ceremony in McCarthy Square in the Capital City of Banjul.
“Their Royal Highnesses’ visit will celebrate the UK’s historic ties with these three Commonwealth nations, and also our dynamic contemporary partnerships with each of them in areas ranging from business to the arts, defence co-operation to medical research,” a statement released from England states.
This tour will undoubtedly be of benefit to The Gambia as it will also highlight the people-to-people links between our countries and the invaluable contribution they make to our shared prosperity and security.
The visit will also see them tour places like the Medical Research Centre, which is a faculty of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Gambian Armed Forces Training Centre, where troops are trained for their role with the United Nations.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall last night jetted at the Banjul International Airport for a three-day visit to The Gambia.
Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed by President Adama Barrow and his cabinet ministers, who escorted the Royals to Coco Ocean Hotel where they were received with a colorful cultural ceremony.
This morning, the Prince will hold a public function at the McCarthy Square for the official welcoming ceremony few hours after meeting the Gambian leader at State House.
Prince Charles was born on 14 November 1948 and is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II. He has been Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952, and is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
He is also the longest-serving Prince of Wales, having held that title since 1958. Charles was born at Buckingham Palace as the first grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
He was educated at Cheam and Gordonstoun Schools, which his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, had attended as a child, as well as the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia. After earning a bachelor of arts degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, Charles served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy from 1971 to 1976.
In 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer and they had two sons: Prince William (b. 1982)—later to become Duke of Cambridge—and Prince Harry (b. 1984)—later to become Duke of Sussex. In 1996, the couple divorced following well-publicised extramarital affairs by both parties. Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris the following year. In 2005, Charles married long-time girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles.

Prince Charles, the Prince of the Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall has said that the United Kingdom is ready to help The Gambia’s infrastructure in rebuilding the country for the attainment of its development aspirations.
The Prince was speaking at a welcoming ceremony held at the McCarthy Square in Banjul, yesterday.
He said his visit was a testimony of the bond that binds The Gambia and the United Kingdom, and “also the myriad of historical ties and relations that exist between our peoples.”
“U.K. and The Gambia would work together in helping to address the most pressing challenges of our times, climate change, youth unemployment, and respect for human rights. These would be done by harnessing the experience and knowledge from The Gambia and the United Kingdom,” he added.
Prince Charles said he was happy about the way he was welcomed at the Banjul International Airport, welcoming, saying that’s why people called The Gambia, the Smiling Coast of Africa.
“Our time in Gambia, we look forward to meeting many of the places if we can and see for ourselves something that makes The Gambia so special. It is clear to us alright, however, that we have to come back again before too long. Our visit is opportunity to celebrate the bond of friendship between U.K. and The Gambia, the merit connection between our people and in many areas that our two countries cooperate,” the Prince highlighted.
President Adama Barrow for his part expressed delight in receiving the Royal Highness; describing it as true as ‘true love’ for The Gambia. He added that The Gambia’s re-admission into Commonwealth is a clear demonstration of his government’s commitment to strengthen international relations with the U.K., and other key development partners.
He urged the U.K. to continue supporting The Gambia’s economic sector and infrastructure for the attainment of the country’s development aspirations.
He added that his government is very committed to upholding the principles of democracy, access to justice, and also to be the beacon of democracy in the sub-region.
“As a new government, we look forward to a meaningful engagement with the Commonwealth family and structures to implement our development programmes,” Barrow said.
He said the recent decision by The Gambia to join the Commonwealth is an ample testimony of his government’s readiness to enhance international cooperation.
“I call on the Commonwealth family to stand by us, accompany us and enhance its visibility through concrete actions and the application of instrument that would build our human resource capacity.”

Prince Charles and his delegation will leave Banjul for Accra today and from there, he would proceed to Nigeria.
His visit to the three countries from the 31st October to 8th November is made at the request and on behalf of the British government.
The tour will celebrate the U.K.’s dynamic, forward-looking partnership with these Commonwealth nations on a range of shared priorities. The visits will highlight key themes in these relationships, including the importance of our Commonwealth ties.
After his visit to The Gambia, he is proceeding to Ghana. It would be recalled that the Prince of Wales’s last visit to Ghana was in March 1977. This will be the Duchess of Cornwall’s first visit to Ghana.
The Prince of Wales has made three previous official visits to Nigeria in March 1990, May 1999 and November 2006. This will be The Duchess of Cornwall’s first visit to Nigeria.
