"The national forest resources assessment of 2010 has indicated that the level of forest cover loss stands at 97,000 hectares. Isn’t that figure alarming?"
VERY ALARMING ! also is the fact that the survey is 8 years old the way the forest has been used for firewood and export of timber during those 8 years mean that the "97,000 hectares." mentioned is MUCH LESS, how much?
I know lets ask Lamin Dibba !!!!

Forests play a crucial role in the development of any nation. Apart from preventing global warming and building sustainable communities, forests have a variety of functions, including land conservation, security of water resources, control of climate change and creation of natural environs, which are all essential to human existence. Forests also have medicinal purposes as traditional healers collect herbs for cure of our ailments.

The Minister of Forestry and Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources Lamin Dibba recently decried the current and alarming rate of deforestation and land degradation in the country.

The national forest resources assessment of 2010 has indicated that the level of forest cover loss stands at 97,000 hectares. Isn’t that figure alarming?

As he rightly stated Gambians have a huge task at hand to ensure that the trend is reversed to guarantee a healthy and productive ecosystem balance for the present as well as generations to come.

Reducing the burden on the environment and building recycling-oriented society requires a well defined policy focus on the utilisation of community forests. The inter-link between forest conservation and global warming deserves much attention, given the role of forests as an absorber of carbon dioxide.

As we all know The Gambia is faced with numerous challenges of deforestation, land degradation, loss of biodiversity and climate change to address. Thus, it’s incumbent on all to contribute significantly towards addressing and salvaging the dire situation the country is facing.

The fact that communities are now participating in the management of their own community forests is a laudable move, but there is need for attitudinal changes, especially towards forest and its resources.

Once upon a time, The Gambia used to be a vibrant spot when it comes to spotting thick and densely populated forest across the country. The trend is reversing as our forests are degrading very fast due to human and other disasters.

We need to adopt sound forests policies and safe conservation approach to further reduce the alarming rate at which the country’s forest is depleting.

A local bank and the environment agency recently embarked on massive tree planting exercise at the infamous Bakoteh dumpsite and other areas within the Kanifing Municipality.
The Eco Bank Gambia Ltd in collaboration with the National Environment Agency (NEA) and other key stakeholders planted one thousand trees on August 4th, to mark this year’s World Environment Day which fell on June 5.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise, Dawda Badjie from NEA says that over the years, Gambia has experienced high level of vegetation loss and it is every one’s responsibility to fix the problem by planting trees as lack of trees affect “our lives directly as humans” and others, the fauna and flora that depend on trees.
He went further to say that trees contribute to climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. He added that during the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen that humans breathe. “A report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture states that one acre of the forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts four tons of oxygen,” he said. “Many animals, including elephants, koalas and giraffes eat leaves for nourishment. Flowers are eaten by monkeys, and nectar is a favorite of many birds and many insects,” he stated.
For her part, the Managing Director of Eco Bank ltd, Madam Josephine Annan Ankomah, said that the importance of national tree planting day could not be underestimated stressing how the move would positively impact on the lives of “our children, their grandchildren and their great grandchildren enabling them to enjoy the splendors of our wonderful planet.”
Quoting from a report, she discloses that during the years from 2000 to 2013 forest, landscapes have dwindled each year by 70,000 square kilometers globally and it estimates that between 3.5 billion and 7billion trees are cut down each year. “Under our ‘planting today, protecting tomorrow’ initiative, we at Eco Bank are reaffirming our commitment to protecting mother earth by planting trees.” “We are truly backing our worlds and commitment with action,” she added.
The acting CEO of KMC, Mrs. Salama Njie deputizing for the KMC Mayor Talib Bensouda thanked Eco Bank for the great initiative and assured them of her municipality’s unflinching support. Mrs. Njie further tasked the Environment and Sanitation Committee of the municipality to ensure that the trees are well kept.

“Trees at Brikama Nyambai Forest were purposely planted for commercial ventures for the government and not to serve as a source of forest cover to the country,” says Kebba Jammeh, head of Technical Unit at Nyambai Forest.

Mr. Jammeh’s comments came following public speculation over felling of hundreds of mainly Malina trees in the said forest.

Mr. Jammeh in an interview with The Point at his office in Brikama recently said it is not the first time that such an exercise had happened in the Nyambai Forest, reminding that a similar harvesting was done 20 years after the Malina species were first introduced in the country in 60s.

He added that such an exercise is done after the trees have reached 20 years of life span rotation period to be removed and allow other new copies to grow along the stem of a particular Malina tree.

He pointed out that the Brikama Nyambai Malina Forest was introduced in the 1960s as exotic tree species which were mainly planted to provide building and roofing beams for house construction including woods for making tables and furniture to the general public.

“What I wanted to make clear is that Nyambai Forest is not meant to serve as source of forest cover or to provide rainfall to the country. What people do not understand here is that Brikama Nyambai Forest is purposely planted to serve as a source of revenue to the Forestry Department,” Jammeh said.
He finally explained that people should not be surprised by the felling of the Malina trees at the said forest, pointing out that there is always a maturity period for such trees to be removed whenever they reach their 20 years rotation period
