GNOC presidency up for grabs again

"One of the most powerful positions in Gambian sports, the presidency of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, GNOC, will be up for grabs on March 23 when the General Assembly of the GNOC meets in an elective congress to elect a president and seven other positions.
According to a memo circulated to affiliated national sports associations by the GNOC, the nominations will close on March 11 by which date all aspiring candidates for any of the elective positions should submit their nomination papers signed by either their president or secretary general.
Investigations so far conducted by this reporter revealed that as yet no one has publicly made his or her intention to contest the March 23 election.
The GNOC elections of 2009, which saw the election of incumbent Momodou Dibba, was enmeshed in deep controversy over who and which association had legitimate rights to be part of the electoral list.
It is not yet clear as to whether there has been any agreement on or changes to the electoral list for this month’s election too.
Dibba’s former opponent Abdoulie Touray has since announced that he is not running for the job anymore."

Tennis boss Jammeh declares candidature for GNOC president

"No sooner our breaking news about the proposed March 23 GNOC elections hit the streets last week than credible sources revealed that a very strong candidate is in the offing.
By Friday evening our sources had led us to the doorstep of Sheriff Jammeh, current president of the Gambia Lawn Tennis Association.
Mr Jammeh, our source said, has a solid backing of many national sports associations and is widely believed to be the biggest opponent to anyone eyeing the top job at Olympic House.
Contacted for comments on his possible candidature, Mr Jammeh confidently confirmed it on Friday, saying: “Yes, I am running for the GNOC presidency. I have just filed in my nomination papers.
“I am contesting after been called upon by many serious and well-meaning people, with whom I share a mission to transform the GNOC from its present state to a true national organization run by credible people at the service of the country, in line with the new thinking by government to put all sports on a new and sound footing.
“I have accepted to take up the challenge by standing in the elections and when that bridge is crossed, I will then get down to deliberate and deliver the visions and ideas I may have to develop that organization, and by extension, Gambian sports.’’
Sheriff Jammeh has been president of the Gambia Lawn Tennis Association for a little over 10 years and is widely respected in sports circles as a man of integrity and one with a great passion for hard work and honesty.
“Mr Jammeh is the man needed to get us out of this mess and pave a new direction for us,’’ commented Johnny Gomez of the Gambia Cricket Association, whose national association backs Mr Jammeh.
The GNOC elections will take place on March 23." |

6 NOMINATIONS OUT OF 23 FOR DIBBA’S RIVAL CANDIDATE

"Amid the flurry of twists and turns and furore hovering over the GNOC presidency, incumbent’s rival candidate Sheriff J Jammeh had six nominations to his name as the race for the Olympic House’s top portfolio spices up.Dibba running for re-election –after the expiry of his first term –garnered seventeen nominations from the possible twenty-three following the suspension of three other associations that could have seen a bump in the overall list of eligible voters to 26.
Before a low turnout of associations for the official call for Presidential Nominations, seasoned journalist Namory Trawally was tasked to unravel contents of the package said to be from the IOC, as the Committee puts it ‘for the sake of transparency’. While 17 associations threw their weight behind incumbent Momodou Dibba, Jammeh had to make with only six backing his candidature.
The voter list was approved 8th March by the International Olympic Committee which was subjected to thorough scrutiny and review. Haruna Cham-, President of Gambia Handball -, had his candidature nullified because self-nominations runs contrary to the NOC constitution. “I have avoided the office (GNOC) since last week because of the nominations” Dibba said. Judo, an association that was controversially barred from voting over eligibility, is drafted in the final document.
Twelve associations are to obtain double voting status, eleven with single voting rights while three others also secure single voting.

RUGBY UNION MUTE OVER INTERNATIONAL SUSPENSION

"The Gambia Rugby Union is tight-lipped over its banning from the international Rugby Federation. The association was approached for its reaction over claims that it has been temporally axed by the World Rugby body for failure to meet standard outlines, submission of reports and subscription fees amongst host others. But after frantic efforts to reach the body’s president, this news outlet managed to contact the Secretary General who had chosen to play mute when grilled.
Weightlifting and Cycling are two of the three Gambia national associations said to be serving an indefinite ban by incumbent GNOC’s Alh. Momodou Dibba.
The aforementioned bodies faced expulsion from the list of eligible ballot-casting associations for the coming Gambia National Olympic Committee presidential polls but will however be invited to witness the congress. The revelations came to light during the presidential nominations held at the Committee’s bureau yesterday morning.
“The GNOC has no influence in the suspension of the associations. It was entirely the decision of their respective international Federations. Some of them were invited for discussion; wrestling were called for talks with us but their president never turned up; for Rugby we were working on getting the status before this,” Momodou Dibba, said the incumbent GNOC on Tuesday." |

DIBBA LAUDS INITIATIVE TO RESOLVE GNOC SAGA

"Incumbent Alhagie Momodou Dibba has hail initiative to put to rest the existing hatchet between rival camps. The Sports ministry mapped out a six-point plan to settle the dust that has come close to rekindling the row that occurred during the Olympic House’s elective congress in 2011. The sports minister announced of a new tribunal that will independently verify facts of the elections.
To this, Dibba who is running for re-election, said is a welcome initiative. “It is important with what the ministry is doing. I think it is useful for all of us to work together for the development of sports in the country together with the various sporting associations” the administrator-cum Marketing Consultant said.
The Government’s six point plan reads as follows:
(1) all stakeholders to accept the totality and validity of the report of the National Sports Tribunal and that the implementation of the recommendation of the said report or the lack of it is discretionary;
(2)ensure the withdrawal by the GNOC of the court proceedings in the High Court against the National Sports Tribunal, the Sports Council, the Ministry of Sports and the Minister of Youth and Sports;
(3) the GNOC to report to the IOC that the difficult situation that existed between the GNOC and the Ministry of Sports has been addressed and resolved, and that relations are cordial, so as to seal Gambia from any possible sanctions by the IOC;
(4)bring all conflicting parties in the GNOC presidential elections of February 2011 to a negotiating table forreconciliation;
(5) begin a collective and coordinated six months reform programme for sports development that will ensure clarity of responsibilities, relationships and operational framework for all actors in sports in the country and finally,
(6) work out a transitional programme to ensure a smooth and credible transfer of positions from the current crop of sports administrators to a new generation of leaders.
Minister Jammeh in a separate development had vowed to clamp down on fraud and other malpractices littering the country’s sports development. Mr. Jammeh revealed that few associations foiled plan to forge the Sports Ministry’s old letterhead.
Dibba continued, “So, on the fraud it is important, it is crucial to raise issues over the fraud. There have been such things in some associations.
The 70-year-old Dibba clarified over the recent suspension of national associations by affiliate international federations.
“Cycling is not part of the internationally suspended associations but they are suspended by the general assembly through hands-up voting during our extraordinary session. It is Weightlifting and Rugby that are internationally suspended” he clarified." |

Sports Council turns down invitation to conduct GNOC Elections
"According to reliable sources, the NSC had politely declined the GNOC invitation to supervise the planned elections, which has now been put on hold by a court order.
But, said our sources, the reasons forwarded by the NSC for boycotting the elections are not all that conciliatory.
Our sources revealed that the NSC had complained about the inclusion of Judo, Softball and Special Olympics associations in the voter list of the GNOC, since these associations are currently deregistered for not meeting the national criteria set for national associations.
It is not clear whether the NSC and GNOC will come to an agreement on the above differences any time before the now stalled election process restarts."...
