TRAGIC Gambian children are being sold to British paedophiles for as little as £2-a-time by their desperate parents, Sun Online can reveal.
Huge numbers of predators are taking advantage of lax laws in the poverty stricken African country to embark on sick child abuse holidays where they openly target little boys and girls.
Sun Online saw first hand how poor Gambian children can be vulnerable to British paedos when we visited the beach resorts that dot Kololi on the country’s picturesque Atlantic coastline.
Our reporter was constantly shocked by the number of unaccompanied African minors he saw being cared for by middle-aged, Western men who did not appear to be their biological fathers.
The encounters witnessed included a girl aged between six and eight having lunch with a balding, white haired man in a restaurant filled with similarly aged tourists.
The same day we saw a stoutly built man in his 50s or 60s wading into the ocean gripping the hand of a tiny African child in white swimming shorts.
Equally unsettling was the sight of a Gambian toddler watching wide-eyed with fear as a middle-aged white woman got into a fist fight with a young black prostitute at a popular beach bar.
It was 11.30pm at night and the air was thick with cigarette smoke. The child, no older than two, was being held closely by a white man with a British accent.
Children sold for £2
Our investigation comes as experts warn that the economic crisis unleashed by the collapse of travel firm Thomas Cook is helping turn the former British colony into a “paedophile paradise” where perverts can operate unchecked.
Thomas Cook flew 45 per cent of The Gambia’s 100,000 annual visitors from the UK to the capital Banjul until it went into liquidation under the weight of its debts in September.
In an exclusive interview, Lamin Fatty, the National Coordinator of the Child Protection Alliance in The Gambia, reveals that both male and female tourists are targeting African minors.
He warns: “Sex is cheap in my country and children are being sold for as little as 150 dalasis, or just over £2 in your currency.
“Some of the parents know their children are being abused and they accept it because they are so desperate for food in their bellies.
“Others are too naïve to realise. They think the Westerner is paying their bills and helping their boy or girl out of the kindness of their heart, while in reality they have bad intentions.
“Child abuse is going on all the time in The Gambia and the government is not doing enough to put a stop to it.
“Our children are being approached directly on the beaches or the street and child abusers from all over Europe including the UK are coming here for this.
“I want to make clear that this does not just involve men but also adult women who are paying for sex with teenage boys in The Gambia.
"We have laws that are supposed to stop this from happening but they are not being enforced so we have become a paradise for paedophiles."

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare has slammed as malicious Sun newspaper’s article which described Gambia as a paradise for paedophilia where tourists are buying Gambian children for sex.
The Sun newspaper quoted the CPA boss: “Gambian children are being sold to British paedophiles for little as €2- a- time by their desperate parents.” However, CPA has since refuted the comments.
The ministry said the article is malicious and based on misinformation and mischaracterisation of the facts.
“The government as a state party to various international treaties, most notably the UN Convention on the rights of the child, elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, the African charter on the rights and welfare of the child, has invested heavily in the promotion and protection of the rights of children,” the ministry added.
The ministry further stated: “The Children’s Act 2005 protects all the children in The Gambia and places a duty on everyone to report to either the police or department of social welfare any case of child abuse or the violations of the right of any child that he/she is aware of. The Act expressly prohibits sexual abuse or sexual exploitation of a child in any form or to keep a brothel or allow a child to be in brothel. In addition, the Tourism Offences Act strictly prohibits unlawful sexual advances to a child, procurement of a child for sex, child pornography and indecent acts by tourists among others.”
“The government through the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare together with Ministry of Tourism has taken a firm stand against child sex tourism in the country and measures are in place to protect children most especially in the tourism sector. The government informs the public that there is zero tolerance for child abuse or child exploitation and any person found wanting will face the full force of the law,” the release added.

The Gambian police have questioned the National Coordinator of Child Protection Alliance (CPA) over his sex tourism comment in the British newspaper, but he maintains his statement that the government has failed to address the menace.
However, Lamin Fatty claimed that the reporter of The Sun has distorted the fact by quoting as saying the children in The Gambia are cheap.
The newspaper published the article on January 16th with the headline: “Inside ‘paedo paradise’ The Gambia where sex beasts are buying African children and toddlers to rape.”
The publication indicated the British pedophiles who branded themselves as tourists would be sexually abusing Gambian children – girls and boys – on the beaches.
The article quoted Lamin Fatty as saying, “Sex is cheap in my country and children are being sold for as little as 150 dalasis, or just over £2 in your currency.”
He was further quoted: “Child abuse is going on all the time in The Gambia and the government is not doing enough to put a stop to it.
Fatty is an ardent child and women’s rights defender
Soon after the publication, Fatty took to Facebook to disassociate himself with the comment. He claimed that he was misquoted by the reporter who interviewed him.
However, this did not stop the police from subjecting him to further questioning.
“I was invited for questioning by the TSU in relation to my interview with ‘The Sun’ on Friday. I was asked to report on Monday and when that happen, I was led to the Serious Crime Unit at the Police Headquarters for further questioning,” he said.
However, he said he sticks to his comment about the government’s inaction to address the menace.
“I still stick by everything that has been said in The Sun article the only thing that I deferred with the reporter is where he misquoted me to have said sex is as cheap as D150. I did not make such comment and I deny saying so, it was cooked up by the reporter,” he stated.
Fatty confirmed that he was not charged nor was there any legal action taken against him by the Gambia Tourism Board.
The Gambia’s good name in tourism has been tainted over the years as several reports of this nature have been circulated in recent times– affecting the arrival of the visitors due to fear.

The Board of Directors of the Child Protection Alliance (CPA) wishes to express its grave concern on the above mentioned article, published on 16th January 2019 by The Sun Newspaper in UK which quoted the National Coordinator of the CPA to have said ‘Sex is cheap in my country and children are being sold for as little as D150.00, or just over 2 Euros’ and ‘Some parents know their children are being abused and they accept it because they are so desperate for food in their bellies”.
The Board wants to stress that these statements attributed to the National Coordinator are malicious and total distortion of what was actually said to the reporter. What the National Coordinator said was in reference to the vulnerable situation of child hawkers and the paltry amount of D150 some of them make at the end of day’s sale. Nothing was mentioned about the purchase of sex with a toddler for about £2.
While we find certain parts of the said article sensational and distasteful, we think the reporter has exposed a serious canker worm in our “body tourism”: the sheer lack of commitment by the State to the fight against sexual exploitation of children in our travel and tourism; the negligence and complicity of parents in the abuse of their children; child and family poverty; the indescribable, mindboggling laxity in the enforcement and implementation of the “good” laws we have for the protection of our children; the immense vulnerability and risks our children daily face; the glamorization of sex tourism; and materialism which has pervaded the moral fabrics of our society.
CPA recognizes the great importance and contribution of tourism to the economy of our country, and as a big employer and source of income for many people. We equally appreciate the efforts of the Government in making the country an attractive destination. However, CPA strongly believes in the promotion and creation ofresponsible and sustainable tourism which places child protection at its centre, in particular the fight against sexual abuse and exploitation of children. ‘Destination Gambia’ has an obligation to protect its children and to ensure that no one uses of the facilities of its travel and tourism industry to sexual abuse and exploit our children or take advantage of vulnerable families. CPA wishes to renew its commitment to the cause of children in The Gambia, to the protection of children from all forms of abuse, violence, discrimination and exploitation, and to holding the State, as a primary duty bearer, accountable for its obligations to respect, protect and fulfil the rights of children.
Finally, the Board wishes to assure the State and all relevant child protection actors of CPA’s commitment to further strengthening of the already established collaboration and partnership in our quest to creating an enabling, protecting, warm and violent-free environment for all children in The Gambia.
(The Board wants to clarify that its National Coordinator, Mr. Lamin Fatty, was neither arrested nor harassed by the Police or by any authorities,contrary to news which was carried by some media outlets. Mr. Fatty was invited by the Police to make clarification on certain aspects of the said article and to which request he duly complied.)

Newspapers in the UK are in a very competive environment and quite often articles are published that are designed to shock and to get the newspaper noticed,the Sun has employed such tactics in the past (in my opinion) to get the newspaper an improved circulation (improved sales) bearing in mind the giant leaps that have taken place in obtaining news and information virtually as it happens.This latest "Shock" article MAYBE a case in point. |

The Sun in a story published on 16 January dubbed: SICK SALES Inside ‘paedo paradise’ The Gambia where sex beasts are buying African children and toddlers to rape’, quoted Mr Fatty saying: “Sex is cheap in my country and children are being sold for as little as 150 dalasis, or just over £2 in your currency.”
Reacting to the article, Fatty said: “It has been brought to my attention that a news item published by the Sun Newspaper is being circulated online and I was quoted to have said sex is cheap in my country and children are being sold for as little as 150 dalasis, or just over £2 in my currency. This is not only false but malicious.” |
