Personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) have arrested 3 people in Sambang Mandinka following a fracas on Saturday.
The four arrested include the alkalo of the community. The arrestees are Kitim Jadama (the Alkalo), Jombo Sanneh and one Yaya Conteh. The two Sambang communities; Mandinka and Fula have dispute over a piece of land. The two are neighbouring communities in the Niamina West District, Central River Region.
Some members of Sambang Mandinka who spoke to Foroyaa, said they were denied visitation at the police station after their relatives were arrested by the Police.
Speaking to members of Sambang Fula community, they said they were not involved in the scuffle. They said the problem was between the police and members of Sambang Mandinaka.
A native of Sambang Mandinka Kunda, who prefers anonymity, explained that the Court had in the past issued an injunction barring the two communities from working on the rice fields. Foroyaa could not independently confirm whether the injunction was later lifted by the Court, but learnt that the problem between the Police Intervention Unit and the Community of Sambang Mandinka erupted after the Police found them working on the land.
Police PRO, ASP Lamin Njie, when contacted for comment, told this medium that he will take up the matter and inform the paper accordingly.
The Gambia has been recently faced with communal land disputes. Some of the land disputes had resulted in violence including the shooting of one individual in Gunjur who eventually died after sustaining gunshot injuries. September 23, 2019 |

Reports reaching Foroyaa reveal that a land case which started with the district tribunal and proceeded to the high court with the aim of allowing the rule of law to prevail to avoid any form of conflict suddenly erupted into a turbulence that has left the villagers traumatized. Tear gas canisters exploded in their dozens affecting women with different health status.
Foroyaa aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this developing story to find out from the villagers what ought to be done to prevent recurrence. It is important for the state to look at the socio-cultural factors underpinning such conflicts rather than merely focus on the judicial outcome. What must be avoided is to nurture deep-seated animosity between communities that would entertain revenge and hostilities on a continuous basis. Land is just a means of survival. It should not be a source of injuries and death.

Four inhabitants of Sambang Mandinka who were arrested and detained by Police during the weekend, have been granted bail.
Police spokesperson ASP Lamin Njie on Monday told Foroyaa: ““Four people including the Alkalo were arrested by the Police, but they were subsequently granted bail.”
Njie said a restriction order was issued by the Court to prevent the community from encroaching on a piece of land which is a subject of dispute in the said community.
He said on Saturday, some residents of Sambang Mandinka went to the said land, adding the police went there to stop them from doing any work on the disputed land.
He said the Police wanted to arrest some of them, but the villagers who were armed with knives and cutlasses resorted to obstructing them from executing their duties. He said the Police subsequently employed reasonable force to carry out their work
He said the police are currently investigating the matter. https://foroyaa.gm/police-grant-bail-to-four-inhabitants-of-sambang/ |
