Legal: Gunjur vs Golden Lead at the High Court
Gunjur News Online

The civil suit filed against Chinese owned Golden Lead fish processing factory by concerned environmental groups in Gunjur today resumed at the High Court of The Republic of The Gambia before Justice Amina Saho Ceesay.

When the case came up on 28th October, it failed to proceed because the presiding judge was said to be upset about articles attacking her on Gunjur Online that alleged that her husband is a friend to Lawyer Lamin S. Camara who is the defence counsel for Golden Lead and that she should rescue herself from the case because of conflict of interest. The case was subsequently adjourned to 20th November 2019.

When the case resumed on Wednesday, 20th November, counsels for both parties agreed on consent terms where the parties will meet to discuss to agree or disagree on a potential out of court settlement. If the parties agree, the terms of the agreement will then become the consent judgment. Failing an agreement between the parties, the case will proceed on the next adjournment date of 29th January 20 20.

Golden Lead fishmeal processing factory is accused of polluting the local lagoon right next to the factory by killing aquatic lives and the natural vegetation of the bolong Fenyo as a result of untreated waste water that was pumped into the lagoon.

The environmental groups are claiming damages of in excess of D15 million Dalasis.
